Cougars win third Piedmont District championship
The Patrick County High School men's tennis team clinched the Piedmont District title with a win over Bassett Thursday evening. The Cougars beat the Bengals 8-1. It was the Cougars' 11th straight win. Their record is 11-2 and 5-0 in the Piedmont District.
Earlier in the week, the Cougars shut out Magna Vista 9-0 for the third time this season.
Patrick County hosted the Warriors last Tuesday afternoon. Kyle Cockram (8-0), Derrick Agee (8-3), Davis Wilkins (8-0), Aaron Hubbard (9-7), Tyler Scales (8-0) and Brad Shelton (8-3) were singles winners.
Derrick Agee and Austin Cole won the #1 doubles match 8-2. Lucas Terry and Ross Tatum won the #3 doubles match 8-2, and Jarrod Arnder and Jordan Easter won the #3 doubles with a forfeit.
"The most exciting match of the day was Aaron Hubbard's come-from-behind victory to win the #4 singles match," said Coach Stephen Henderson.
Thursday's win at Bassett sealed the Piedmont District championship for the Cougars.
Singles winners were Kyle Cockram (8-1), Derrick Agee (8-6), Davis Wilkins (8-0), Aaron Hubbard (8-5), Tyler Scales (9-8), and Lucas Terry (8-4).
Doubles winners were Kyle Cockram and Austin Cole (8-3) at #2, and Lucas Terry and Drew Cockram (8-5) at #3.
This is Coach Henderson's second Piedmont District championship, the team's third championship in a row. "This week has been exceptional. We shut out Magna Vista for the third time and managed to beat Bassett 8-1, an excellent effort for the men on this team," Henderson said. "Bassett has improved a great deal over the season," he added.
"Tyler Scales had a tough match with Caleb Inman at the #5 seed. They battled for over an hour before Tyler pulled ahead, just like they did in the previous match," he said.
"I am particularly proud of sophomore Derrick Agee's perfect record of 12-0 this season. Also, Davis Wilkins is 9-1, and freshman Tyler Scales is 9-3. We have some good, young players to make a run at more Piedmont District championships in the future," he said.
The Cougars played Martinsville Tuesday and traveled to Floyd Wednesday before they start preparing for Region IV competition.
The Cougars will play the winner of the River Ridge District at Virginia Tech May 20.
Lady Cougar tennis wins two matches

The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar tennis team won two district matches last week to improve its season record to 3-2 in the district. Tuesday, the Lady Cougars shut out Magna Vista 9-0. Thursday, they won against Bassett 5-4.
In Tuesday's match at Magna Vista, the Lady Cougars dominated with the Lady Warriors never winning more than four games in a match.
Winners in singles action included Megan Willard (8-4), Jamie Burgess (8-1), Cameron Kolinski (8-2), Cara Turney (8-0), Colleen Buchanan (8-2) and Aubree Touchstone (8-4).
Doubles winners included Willard/Kolinski (8-4), Burgess/Turney (8-4) and Buchanan/Touchstone (8/4).
The Lady Cougars' victory came down to the last two doubles matches Thursday night against Bassett. Jamie Burgess and Cara Turney (#2 doubles) and Colleen Buchanan and Aubree Touchstone (#3 doubles) won their matches 8-6, 8-6, within moments of each other, sewing up the win for Patrick County, 5-4.
Singles winners were Megan Willard (8-6), Cara Turney (forfeit due to injury) and Colleen Buchanan (8-6).
"This was a very hard fought match," said Coach Rebecca Gibson. "Both teams exemplified the utmost sportsmanlike conduct and athletic ability, and both teams should be commended for such."
This was the final home match for the Lady Cougars and senior Cameron Kolinski was recognized as the only senior on the team. She received a sash and carnation which she presented to her mother, Elizabeth Kolinski.
"Much gratitude and thanks goes out to all parents and supporters of the girls' tennis team this season," Gibson said. "The season would not have been as successful without all your assistance and support."
The Lady Cougars played their final match Tuesday at Martinsville.
Cougars split two district games

The Patrick County High School Cougar baseball team lost to Tunstall 17-0 in five innings last Tuesday afternoon. Friday, the Cougars defeated Magna Vista in a close battle, 6-5.
The Trojans started a scoring spree in the first inning, bringing seven runners across the plate. They added two more in the second and eight in the third inning.
"We didn't come out ready to play and got embarrassed," said Coach Terry Harris. "You better bring your best game when you go on the road to Tunstall. If not, you're going to get beat."
Friday, the Cougars bounced back against the Warriors, scoring two runs in the second, three in the third to tie, and scoring the winning run in the eighth inning. The Warriors scored two in the first, and three in the second.
"I'm proud of the way these guys bounced back after the loss on Tuesday," Harris said. "They played hard and well. Riley Bowers came in in the second inning and did a great job on the mound.
"We battled all day. We got behind, but didn't give up. We got down a couple of bunts in the eighth that were huge; they just kept battling and pulled it out in the end," Harris said.
Eric Renegar and Derrick Hopkins each had two hits, including doubles. Bowers had a single and two RBIs.
The Cougars are 8-8 on the season.
They hosted Bassett Tuesday afternoon. They will host Chatham Friday at 6 p.m.
Lady Cougars win three last week

The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar softball team completed an impressive week with three big wins. Last Tuesday the Lady Cougars started play against Tunstall and picked up a great 3-1 victory over the Lady Trojans. Friday, Patrick County defeated Magna Vista 4-1, and Saturday, they beat West Stokes 3-1 in a tough game.
In Tuesday's game at Tunstall, the Lady Trojans scored first in the first inning off two Lady Cougar errors.
Suzanne Plasters led off the fourth inning with a walk, moved to second on a bunt by Maghan Fain and scored on an RBI single by Whitney Bowers.
Kaitlyn Culler led off the sixth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Plasters. She later scored on an RBI single by Fain. Fain moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Kylene Culler.
"After the first inning, the Lady Cougars played great defense with key plays by Kylene Culler, Chelsea Bradshaw and Ingrid Joyce," said Coach Gerald Culler. "Maghan Fain, Suzanne Plasters and Holly Willard turned a double on an attempted squeeze play in the fourth.
"This was a great ball game. The girls did everything I asked them to do," Culler said.
Kaitlyn Culler pitched the game with four strike-outs.
The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the third and two in the seventh in Friday's game at Magna Vista.
Ingrid Joyce led hitting with two hard hits, two runs and one RBI. Suzanne Plasters added a hit and two RBIs.
Kaitlyn Culler pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight Lady Warrior batters.
The Lady Cougars are 14-2 overall, 6-1 in the district.
Saturday, the Lady Cougars played a non-district game against West Stokes High School and came home winners 3-1.
"We finished off the week 3-0 with a tough win at West Stokes," said Culler. "Defense was superb with Brittany Martin, Suzanne Plasters and Ingrid Joyce making good plays in the outfield. Whitney Bowers and Katie Hall made several good plays in the infield, and Holly Willard made three excellent plays at third."
Katie Hall pitched five innings to record the win; Kaitlyn Culler came in for the final two, striking out four and recording the save.
Ingrid Joyce and Suzanne Plasters each had two hits with Joyce picking up an RBI, and Plasters scoring two runs.
Tuesday, The Lady Cougars hosted Bassett; Friday, they will host Chatham at 6 p.m.
Lady Cougar soccer wins two matches

The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar soccer team picked up two district wins in away matches last week, defeating Tunstall 2-1 and shutting out Magna Vista 5-0.
Sarah Puckett and Katie Kipreos scored the goals against the Lady Trojans last Tuesday afternoon. Lizzie Leeper and Amber Eutsler recorded assists. Hootie Boles had 11 saves in goal.
"This was a well-played game on both sides," said Coach Sandra Rakes. "We controlled the ball for most of the game and out-shot Tunstall. Defense did a good job in back of stopping their shots."
Friday, the Lady Cougars played one of their better games of the season. Tori Washburn scored four goals and Sarah Puckett added the fifth for the 5-0 shut-out. Katie Kipreos had two assists, as did Emily Freeman. Lizzie Leeper added one. Hootie Boles had nine saves in goal.
"We played really well tonight," said Rakes. "Our passing was good and defense did an outstanding job.
"Magna Vista has a good team, and they played well against us, but we held them to only seven shots for the night," she said.
The Lady Cougars are 6-7 overall, 5-2 in the district.
They hosted Bassett Tuesday and will host Dan River Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Cougars fall to Tunstall, but beat Magna Vista in double OT

The Patrick County High School Cougar soccer team lost 3-1 to Tunstall last Tuesday evening. Friday, they came back and beat Magna Vista 4-3 in double overtime.
Pierre Scales scored the lone goal against Tunstall Tuesday night. Ethan Mordue had 10 saves in goal against the Trojans.
The score was 0-0 at the half, but Tunstall scored a goal 10 minutes into the second half. Scales scored on an assist from Masahiro Iwaoka to tie the game.
The Cougars took possession of the Tunstall kickoff and were on the attack when Tunstall intercepted the ball and made a long pass downfield that resulted in a score.
Patrick County had several more shots that would have tied the game, but they just missed.
Tunstall added an insurance goal for the final score of 3-1.
Friday night, Pierre Scales scored three goals and Oscar Tejeda scored one. Ben Puckett, Ethan Mordue, Masahiro Iwaoka, Adrian Edwards each assisted in the goals.
Goalie Chris Howell had eight saves on 16 Warrior shots.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game. The Cougars tied it with the first of Scales' goals with an assist from Puckett. Then, Magna Vista scored again and Scales scored his second goal with an assist from Mordue with 10 minutes left in the first half.
Ten minutes into the second half Patrick County scored its third goal to take the lead. Magna Vista came back to tie the score 3-3 with 15 minutes left in regulation play.
The first overtime was scoreless.
Chris Howell made a "fantastic" save early in the second OT. Oscar Tejeda scored on an assist from Adrian Edwards with one minute left in the second OT to take the win.
The Cougars are 5-8-1 overall, 1-5-1 in the district.
The Cougars hosted Bassett Tuesday night and will host Dan River Friday night, Senior Night, at 7:30 p.m.
Track teams visit Floyd quad

The Patrick County High School track teams traveled to Floyd last Wednesday and finished second in girls' events and third in boys' events in the quad meet.
In the girls' events, the Lady Cougars were second behind Glenvar, 77-69. East Montgomery scored 45 and Floyd was 27. In boys' events, Glenvar tied Floyd, 64 each; Patrick County was third with 53, and Glenvar finished fourth with 52.
John Krajc finished first in the 100-meter dash (12.0) and first in the 200-meter dash (24.1).
Jacob Bowman was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles, and Clint Womack was second in the shot put. James Mangrum was second in the high jump.
Jared Martin was third in the triple jump and high jump. Josh Ingram was third in the shot. Chris Adkins was third in the 100-meter dash.
The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Chris Adkins, James Mangrum, John Krajc and Jacob Bowman finished first with a time of 47.9.
Alice Gregory finished first for the Lady Cougars in the high jump with a distance of 4'-8". Lara Pluska was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:55.8. Melodie Wimbush was first in the discus with a throw of 100'-7 1/2".
Alice Gregory was second in the triple jump, and Sierra Rhodes was second in the 100-meter high hurdles. Carlin Witt placed second in the 3200-meter run.
Hannah Mabe was third in the 3200-meter run, and Michelle Williams finished third in the 800-meter run. Lizzy Corn was third in the triple jump. Sierra Rhodes was third in the 300 intermediate hurdles, and Megan Willis was third in the 400-meter.
The 4 x 400-meter relay team finished first with a time of 4:46.57. Team members included Michelle Williams, Denise Pendleton, Sierra Rhodes and Megan Willis.
The 4 x 100-meter relay team finished second with a time of 59.5. Runners included Jamyra Giles, Amanda Edmonds, Amber Hutchens and Brandi Freels.
Both track teams traveled to Floyd Tuesday and will host Bassett today (Wednesday) at 4:30 p.m.
