Mrs. Evona Lula Helms, age 85, of Meadows of Dan passed away suddenly and peacefully at her home on December 1, 2025. She was born on January 17, 1940, in Floyd County. Evona was known later in life to many as “Mountain Grandma”, for she was a caring, loving, and hard-working mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She didn’t move a mountain, but she kept her part of the mountain beautiful.

Evona was preceded in death by her parents Lula Belcher Harris and Marvin J Harris; husband, Coy R Helms; brother, Dale Harris; grandson, Justin R Helms and great grandson, Dalton L Derrow.

Left to cherish her memories are her loving companion of over 30 years, Lavoy Bray Sr; sons, Dennis L Helms and wife, Deborah P Helms; Clayton L Helms and wife, Earlene S Helms; three granddaughters, Alice Derrow, April Helms and Angela Helms; also three step grandchildren, Crissie Snyder, Carla Pavon, and Ashley Whitehead; one great granddaughter, Olive R Derrow; sisters, Barbara Luckado and Hettie Webb; brother, Roger Harris; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends that will cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held at Conners View Primitive Baptist Church, 3408 Mountain View Road, Meadows of Dan, on Friday December 5, at 1:00 p.m. with Elder Tim McGrady officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Conners View Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Barry Fain, 459 Woodland Drive, Stuart, VA 24171 or to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 131 Steuart Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94105.
