This month has been a restful one, if you can call it that. Summer reading is behind us and so we took the month to only add a few new programs. Our first “Silent Book Club” was a small gathering but with eight readers in the building, I think it was overall a good start. We discussed why we read and why we prefer specific genres and afterwards we dispersed into the library, finding comfy seats and reading for an hour. The library hosted board game day on the second Friday of the month instead of a Saturday and we had people come and play, which was great. For all who are not aware, board game day is for kids AND adults. Chutes and Ladders, Uno and Jenga were put out to play and people brought their own games as well, but the game of the day was CHECKERS. Some things are just classics.

The highlight of the month (program wise) was meeting author Pepper Basham. As many of you know, Pepper Basham is a “localish” author, who writes contemporary romance as well as Christian fiction novels. Pepper came to our library on August 20, and did a two hour meet and greet. I gave her a tour of the library and bookmobile and took her to visit the museum next door. She was really taken with the bookmobile and asked Gayle several questions. During her talk, she spoke about her writing process and how she researches her book topics for her historical works. We had two “budding” writers in the audience, and she answered questions about the publishing world for them. Fans were able to get autographed books and some free swag she brought with her. She donated seven of her hardback, large print books to our branch and I was deeply touched by her thoughtfulness. It was a magical evening, and we were inspired by her love for writing and connecting with readers. If you have never read one of her books, my three favorites are “The Red Ribbon,” “Authentically Izzy,” and “Hope Between the Pages.”  The last one on audio was great. Meeting Pepper was a great experience for our patrons and we loved spending time with our new author friend.

Also, this month, we had our first Senior Social. This is an opportunity for some of our once a week or biweekly senior patrons to sit down and visit, while drinking coffee or sweet tea and enjoying a pastry. We had eight participants who came, and we have decided to use the monthly Senior Social hour as an opportunity to make crafts and play games, while we visit. Our plans for September include making an autumn themed craft and drinking sweet tea while we visit. Of course, some seniors were slightly worried that my craft would interfere with Leandio’s programs, and I assured them my programs are in addition to his every month. Speaking of Leandio, his Sea Treasure necklace class looked so fun. The ladies who made themselves a necklace came by my office on their way out, to show me their new accessory and were so happy with the final product.

We ended August with another Cindy Howe water coloring class, which was so well received. Cindy really puts in the effort to share her knowledge and love for art, and it shows with the patron’s artwork. I am so thankful for all who are participating in our end of the month art classes. For September’s art class, I will be hosting a Book Bedazzling class on September 27, at 11 a.m. There are a few spots still available, so if you are interested, please call and register. It’s a free class where you can jewel up your personal book that you bring from home. I hope to see this class full as well. I already have my book chosen from my at home library.

To end this month’s report, I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement. The past 90 days here as Branch Manager have been amazing and full of learning opportunities for me. I am loving this chapter of life and couldn’t be happier here at the Patrick County Library. Everyone is so reassuring, and I appreciate the kind sentiments sent my way. Until next month, y’all come see me at the library. Happy reading.
