Forty-one students entered the 4-H Speaking Competition held at Patrick Henry Community College in Stuart on Friday, January 29. Overall winners were selected to move up to the area competition to be held in Pulaski County on May 7.
Kali Craig and Madeline Heath will be moving up to the area contest in dramatic reading. Lillian Cobbler, Mac Edwards, Caitlyn Haynes, and Fiona Woodford will move up with their public speeches.
“How to” PowerPoint presenters competing in area competition will include: Breanna Cox, Suzanne Gonzalez, and Rori Clawson. Susan Boyd and Adrian Ramirez will be competing at the area contest with their research PowerPoint presentations.
Counties competing in the area competition include: Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Patrick, and Pulaski.
Fourth grade students entering the dramatic reading competition included: Tyler Buchanon, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Old School; Allison Carter, Little Women; Kali Craig, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Old School; Haley Gilley, Behold, No Cavities!; Madeline Heath, Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not take the Garbage Out; Madison Mills, Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig; Sabrina Rorrer, Because of Winn-Dixie; and Hannah Wood, Charlotte’s Web.

e students did a great job with their dramatic readings and all of them received blue ribbons. Overall first place ($30) went to Kali Craig. Madeline Heath placed second ($20). Third place ($10) was awarded to Tyler Buchanon.
Fourth grade students entering the Personal Narrative Public Speaking category included: Lillian Cobbler, “The Special Snow Ride;” Heather Edwards, “My First Beach Trip;” BobbiJo Roberts, “Encounter of My Life;” Stephanie Rodriquez, “the Best Birthday Party;” Chase Rupert, “The Boulder Dash;” and Fiona Woodford, “A Day That Changed My Life.”
All of the fourth grade students in the personal narrative category also received blue ribbons. Overall first place ($30) went to Lillian Cobbler. Fiona Woodford placed second ($20). Third place ($10) was awarded to Chase Rupert.
Persuasive public speeches were given by fifth grade students. This was the largest category with 18 students competing. The group was split into two rooms with the top three from each room competing again to determine the overall top three in this category.
Due to a tie in one room, the top seven students (receiving blue ribbons) in the Persuasive Public Speech category were: Mac Edwards with his speech on “Why You Should Not Smoke;” Caitlyn Haynes, “There are Too Many Electronics in Our lives;” Autumn Heath, “Endangered Species;” Emma Pendleton, “The Importance of Community Service and Volunteering;” Sam Pendleton, “Why Cell Phones Should Not Be Allowed in School;” Jadyn Pruitt, “Why Dogs are Better Pets Than Cats;” and Mia Stowe speaking on “Don’t Drink too Much Alcohol.”
Additional 4-Hers receiving blue ribbons included: Caroline Haynes, “Why You Should Not Do Drugs;” Emma Hutchens, “Do Not Litter or Throw Trash Out of the Car Window;” Xander Hylton, “Why Kids Should Not Eat School Lunch;” Lauren Murphy, “Littering;” Andrew Rakes, “Taking Care of Your Pet;” Payton Stovall, “Why We Need More Mobile Health Care Units;” and Sam Wood, “Why Exercise is Good for You.”
Red ribbon winners included: Marshall Adams, “Why You Should Wear a Seatbelt;” Katelyn Delgado, “the Walking Dead TV Show;” Columbia Haycraft, “Why Girls Should Play on Boys Sports Teams;” and Hannah Hughes, “Why People Should Not Drink Alcohol.”
The top three students in the Persuasive Speech Public Speech category were: Mac Edwards, first place ($30); Caitlyn Haynes, second place ($20), and a tie for third place between Sam Pendleton ($10) and Mia Stowe ($10).
Sixth grade students gave “How to” PowerPoint speeches. Students entering the competition included Rori Clawson, Breanna Cox, Suzanne Gonzalez, Brianna Puckett, and Dyson Spence. First place went to Breanna Cox with her presentation on “How to Make Brownies.” Suzanne Gonzalez received the second place award ($20) with her presentation entitled “How to Make a Caesar Salad.” Rori Clawson received the third place award ($10) with her presentation on “How to do an Easy Waterfall Braid.”

Red ribbon winners included Brianna Puckett, “How to Use a Camera” and Dyson Spence, “How to Change a Flat Tire.”
Seventh grade students gave Research Power Point Presentations. Winter Adkins, Susan Boyd, Tristan Moore, and Adrian Ramirez entered this competition. Susan Boyd took first place ($30) with her research PowerPoint entitled “Pandas.” Second place ($20) went to Adrian Ramirez with his power point, “Spinosaurus’s.” Both Susan and Adrian received blue ribbons. Red ribbon winners included: Winter Adkins, “William Shakespeare” and Tristan Moore, “Matchbox Cars.”
Event organizers appreciate everyone who made the competition a success. Judges included: Ursula Allen, Betsy Clark, Glenda Cobbler, Lena Martin, Lisa Martin, Margie Nowlin, Janice Pendleton and Betty Perry. The leaders are proud of all of their 4-Hers who entered the competition.
