Forty-one Patrick County students entered the 4-H Speaking Competition held at Patrick Henry Community College in Stuart on January 27.
Winners from each contest division were selected to move up to the area competition to be held in Pulaski County on Saturday, May 6. Counties competing in the area competition include Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Patrick, and Pulaski.
Fourth-graders Daryl Lynn Combs and Mary Beth Williams were selected to represent Patrick County in Dramatic Reading at the area contest. In the Personal Narrative category, fourth-graders Whitley Kruse and Emily Ring advanced to the area contest.
In Persuasive Speech, fifth-graders Aniya Penn and Fiona Woodford were selected for the area contest. “How to” PowerPoint presenters selected to compete in the area competition were sixth-graders Taylor Edwards, Emma Hutchins, Payton Stovall, and Mia Stowe .
In the Research PowerPoint category, seventh-grader Keiko Klisiewecz was selected for the area competition.
Fourth-grade students entering the Dramatic Reading competition included Daryl Lynn Combs reading from Alice in Wonderland and Mary Beth Williams reading from Charlotte’s Web. Both students received blue ribbons. Overall first place ($30) went to Mary Beth Williams. Daryl Lynn Combs placed second ($20).
Fourth-grade students entering the Personal Narrative Public Speaking category included Haley Grace Cassell – “Loving to Cook,” Skyler Conner – “A Trip to Florida,” Lily Dozier – “My Baby Brother,” Maggie Easter – “The First Time I Rode the Fire Chaser,” Kendall Epperly – “My Day at the River,” Arienah Evans – “My New Little Brother,” Whitley Kruse – “A Fun Day,” Austin Nolen – “The Dangerous Trip,” and Emily Ring – “My First Dance.”
Overall first place ($30) went to Emily Ring. Whitley Kruse placed second ($20). Third place ($10) was awarded to Maggie Easter. These top three students received blue ribbons. Additional blue ribbon winners included Lily Dozier, Kendall Epperly, and Arienah Evans. The personal narrative red ribbon winners were: Haley Grace Cassell, Skyler Conner, and Austin Nolen.
Persuasive Public Speeches were given by fifth-grade students. This was the largest category with 18 students competing. The top three students in the Persuasive Speech Public Speech category were Aniya Penn – first place ($30) – “You Should Believe in God,” Fiona Woodford – second place ($20) – “Why We Need to Save Electricity,” and third place Lauren Worley ($10) – “Animals Should Remain Free.”
Fourth place went to Kali Craig – “Why We Should Protect Endangered Animals,” fifth place went to Kylee Tyson – “Art’s Important,” and sixth place went to Haley Gilley – “Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats.” All of these top winners received blue ribbons.
Additional 4-Hers receiving blue ribbons included Heather Edwards – “Why Cats Are Better Than Dogs,” Harmony Holland – “Should Students be Paid for Good Grades?” Madison Mills – “Why Smokers Should Quit Smoking,” Bobbijo Roberts – “Why Cell Phones Should Be Allowed In Class,” Sabrina Rorrer – “Should Animals Be Kept in Zoos,” Maria Turner – “Why Teachers should Not Give Homework Every Night,” and Lauryn Marie Williams – “Dogs vs. Cats.”
Persuasive Speech red-ribbon winners included Angel M. Carrasquillo – “”Why the Country is Better Than the City,” Arya Patel – “HOLI,” Nicole Enid Torres-Seda – “Why Everyone Should Take Spanish Classes,” Brittany Lee Ann Vernon – “Why Schools Should Not Sell Candy and Sugary Drinks,” and Hannah Wood – “Why Dogs are Better than Cats.”
Sixth-grade students gave “How to” PowerPoint presentations. Students entering the competition included Jessica Conner, Ethan Curry, Mack Edwards, Taylor Edwards, Caitlyn Haynes, Caroline Haynes, Emma Hutchins, Payton Stovall, and Mia Stowe.
First place went to Payton Stovall with his presentation on “Vaccinating Cattle.” Emma Hutchins received the second place award ($20) with her presentation titled “How to Make a Paper Airplane.”
Mia Stowe received the third place award ($10) with her presentation titled “Time to Decorate.” Fourth place went to Taylor Edwards – “How to Make Homemade Apple Pies.” These top four winners all received blue ribbons.
Red-ribbon winners included Jessica Conner – “How to Make Apple Pies,” Ethan Curry – “How to Keep Trading Cards Safe,” Mack Edwards – “How to Get From Charlotte to Massachusetts by Air,” Caitlyn Haynes – “How to Make Brownies,” and Caroline Haynes – “How to Bake a Cake.”
Seventh-grade students gave Research PowerPoint Presentations. Rori Clawson, Breanna Cox, and Keiko Klisiewecz entered this competition. Keiko Klisiewecz took first place ($30) and a blue ribbon with her research Powerpoint titled “The History of Manga.”
Red-ribbon winners included Breanna Cox with her PowerPoint “The Megalodon Shark” and Rori Clawson with her presentation on Lurlena McDaniel.
The Patrick County 4H leaders said they appreciate every person who made the competition a success. The competitions’ judges included Ursula Allen, Betsy Clark, Glenda Cobbler, Casey Elkins, T’Keyah Hines, Phyllis Lemke, Lisa Martin, and Margie Nowlin.
