The Patrick County High School indoor track team traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., last Monday to compete in the JDL Fast Track Invitational.
“This was our first meet since mid-December, so we were anxious to see how our athletes would perform,” said Coach Danel Slaydon.
Lexy Carico won the shot put, throwing an automatic state-qualifying mark. Molly Hernandez threw very well, too, placing third.
The girls 4×800 team of Armonte Carter, Macie Rogers, Montana Moorefield, and Savannah Moorefield crushed the rest of the field, cruising to victory with season’s best time. That same foursome also won the 4×400 relay, running another season’s best.
Macie Rogers set a new personal record (PR) in the 1000m, running to a second place finish. Savannah Moorefield placed second in the 500, followed closely by Armonte Carter in third. Montana Moorefield finished fourth.
A week after signing with Radford University, Juan Cisneros ran a very strong 1000, placing third with a huge PR. Monroe Morse placed second in the 3200 in a very large field of men.
The boys 4×200 relay (Gonzalo Vargas, Nick Byers, Burke Gonzales, Tommy Pauley) and the boys 4×400 relay (Gonzalo Vargas, Juan Cisneros, Burke Gonzalez, Nick Byers) both placed third in their respective events.
“We were very pleased with how our athletes competed today, especially since we missed a week of practice with all of the snow days,” Slaydon said. “We have a very dedicated crew who worked out on their own during the days that we were unable to meet as a team, and their commitment was very evident,” he added.
“We continue to be proud of everyone’s dedication and work ethic,” he said. “We will have one more opportunity to sharpen our racing before the championship season begins in February.”
Other top 10 performances were as follows: Arielle Taylor, 6th (1,000), 8th (mile); Jared Biedrycki, 10th (mile); Nate Montgomery, 9th (shot put); and Tyler Lumpkin, 10th (shot put).
