CLIFFORD N. BOWMAN
Clifford Noel Bowman, 74, of Bassett, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 3, 2017 at his home with his loving family be his side.
He was born in Henry County on March 1, 1941, and was a son of the late Welburn Bowman and the late Maggie Spencer Bowman. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Mark David Bowman in 2000, and a granddaughter, Saige Elizabeth Bowman in 2006.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a man of great faith. He worked for the Lilly Company for several years.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth “Sissy” Martin Bowman; three sons, Bradley Neil Bowman of Bassett, Timothy Rex Bowman of Patrick County and Chadwick Todd Bowman and wife Tabitha of Bassett; four grandchildren, Amanda Bowman, Justin Bowman, Ashley Bowman and Claira Frisco; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Wade Bowman of Bassett; and three sisters, Nannie Turner, Margaret East and Boonie Hancock, all of Bassett.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Pastors Leonard Hall and Terry Dalton officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

SYBIL T. BUTLER
Sybil Ataway Terry Butler, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Virginia Beach on Thursday, January 26, 2017, with her family by her side.
She was born in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late H.O. and Oma Stanley Terry. She was predeceased by her son, Patrick Kelly Butler, five siblings: Clovis Terry, Bernard Terry, Rosalie Conner, Lorna Hurt, and Ruth Milam.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Kelly Butler; daughters, Hillary C. Russell, Della L. Butler, Kathleen R. Butler and Pamela E. Butler; and a grandson, Thomas F. Young Jr.; her remaining four siblings, Carl Terry of Bassett, Mildred Koehler of Falls Church, Guelda Skaggs or Roanoke, and Grady Terry of Meadows of Dan.
She made her priority in her life her loving husband of 69 years and her family. She was very passionate about gardening, an accomplished seamstress and talented artist.

MINNIE A. CASSELL
Minnie Alice Cassell, 69, of Bassett, died Friday, February 3, 2017 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on May 1, 1947 and was a daughter of the late George Elizie Clifton and the late Rosie Myrle Hughes Clifton. She was also preceded in death by a son, Howard J. Lovelace; sisters, Ethel Agee and Betty Deal; and brothers, Dillard, James, Eugene, William, Monroe, Richard, and Jerry Clifton.
She is survived by her husband, David Lee Cassell and one brother, Vance Clifton.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
CHARLIE
CRADDOCK JR.
Charlie Craddock, Jr., 85, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at Blue Ridge Manor.
He was born, February 6, 1931 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Charlie David Craddock and Flora Pendleton Craddock. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence Craddock and Curtis Craddock; and sisters, Doshia Foley, and Frances Rogers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Genevieve L. Craddock; sons, Gary Craddock of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and David Craddock of Spencer; sisters, Nancy Craddock, Margaret O’Dell, and Glenda Shively, all of Ferrum; brothers, Otis “Pete” Craddock and Lewis “Luke” Craddock, both of Ferrum; and three grandchildren.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bassett where he served as a Sunday school superintendent, deacon, and usher. He also served in the Korean War.
The funeral service was held Friday at Collins Funeral Home with Dr. David Towler officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.

SPENCER M. GREGORY
Spencer Mack Gregory, age 73, of Stuart, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Norfolk on November 7, 1943 to the late Spencer M. Gregory Sr. and Lida Mae Stapleton Gregory of Charles Town, W.Va. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Boyd Gregory who passed away 33 days before him; and a sister, Paige Jones.
He retired after 25 years of service in the U.S. Army where he spent four tours in Vietnam as a member of the Army Special Forces. Since his retirement, he loved traveling with his late wife, Opal. Together they visited every state in the Continental U.S. and especially loved traveling to Alaska.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three sons, Lawrence Troy Gregory of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., James Lee Gregory of Savannah, Ga., Morgan Longstreet of New Jersey; a stepdaughter, Shona Helms and husband Jerry of Stuart; three grandchildren, Alexandra, Danielle, and Damian Gregory; three stepgrandchildren, Rocky Helms and wife Amy, Summer Pike and husband Scott, and Dawn Quesinberry and husband Lee; one great-grandchild; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Patty Gregory of Charlotte, N.C., and Lynn Thomas and husband Don of Charles Town.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be held for Spencer and Opal on their anniversary, March 15, in the Burnette Family Cemetery.

JOHN R. HODGES
John Ralph Hodges, 88, of Snow Creek, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017.
He was born on May 1, 1928 to the late John Lee Hodges and Susie Ella Cooper Hodges. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Haley Hodges; and a son, John Ralph Hodges Jr.
He was a member of Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are his daughters, Rachael (Roger) Martin of Patrick County, Linda (Dean) Cooper and Patsy “Pat” Brown, both of Snow Creek, and Pamela Hodges of Charlottesville; sisters, Mildred Law of Snow Creek, Lolena Wright of Ridgeway, and Dorothy Rigney of West Point; and one brother, Charles Hodges of West Point; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held Thursday at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with the Rev. Mike Gallimore officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.

Virginia Dare Coffer Mabe, age 88, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017, at her home.
She was born in Stokes County, N.C., on June 9, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Roy Lee Coffer and Della Lawson Coffer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joffery William Mabe; a son, William Byron Mabe; a granddaughter, Michelle Mabe; a sister, Myra Coffer Collins; and a brother, Charles D. Coffer.
She loved her family, gardening, farming, and cooking. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sharon Mabe of Woodlawn, and Douglas and Shirley Mabe and Bobby and Kathy Mabe, all of Stuart; four daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Clyde Crissman, Phyllis Ann Mabe, Wanda and Jerry Parrish, and Teresa L. Mabe, all of Stuart; 16 grandchildren, Cyndi Crissman Williams and husband Robbie, Joey Dale Mabe and wife Daphne, Angie Mabe Keene and husband John, Jennifer Mabe Mills and husband Joe, Michael Byron Mabe and wife Katherine, Rebecca Mabe Williams and husband Tom, Tammy Mabe, Kevin Douglas Mabe and wife Tracie, Kimberly Mabe Bradley and husband Cass, Phebe G. Mangum, Jeremiah Nathaniel Mabe and wife Janice, Samantha Hill and husband Daniel, Whitney Turner and husband Josh, Christopher Daniel Gammons and wife Pam, Steven Matthew Mabe and wife Stacey, April Mabe Hedrick and husband Sonny; 22 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and her beloved companion, Little Buddy.

MOZELLE O. OWENS
Mozelle Katherine Overby Owens, age 86, of Westfield, N.C., died Monday, January 30, 2017.
She was born November 20, 1930 in Stokes County, N.C., to the late George and Betsy Martin Overby. She was also preceded in death by her husband,. Lester Lee Owens; brothers, Russell Flinchum Overby and Clarence Overby; and a sister, Jessie Mae Overby.
She retired from Vaughan Furniture and was a member of State Line Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Bobby Lee Owens (Sarah) and Timothy Owens; grandchildren; Leygh Ann Goins, Adam Owens (Bri) and Emily McMillian (Cody); four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, James Vester Overby and John Lester Overby (Lois), all of Lawsonville, N.C.
Funeral Service were held on Thursday at State Line Primitive Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Norma Jean Marshall Sands, age 78, of Pilot Mountain, N.C., died Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born April 6, 1938 in Meadows of Dan and was a daughter of the late Daniel Mervin Marshall Sr. and Ethel Hooker Marshall. She was also preceded in death by her son, Marty Linfred Sands; granddaughter, April Yvonne Sands; sister, Mary Lee Burnette; brothers, J.R. Marshall, Vance Marshall and Glen Marshall; and her former husband and father of her children, Lester Johnson Sands Jr.
She was a former social worker and a piano teacher. She was a member of King Christian Center and of the Pentecostal faith.
Surviving are her daughters, Judy Sands Willard of Pinnacle, N.C., and Donna Sands O’Neal of Ararat, N.C.; one son, Michael Sands (Melaina) of Mount Airy, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Brenda Marshall Adams of Pinnacle; one brother, Everett Marshall of Meadows of Dan; a host of nieces and nephews; and her companion of 25 years, Frank Brewster of Pilot Mountain.
The funeral service was conducted Saturday at King Christian Center by Pastor Randall Smith and Michael Sands. Burial was at Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Thomas Scott, age 86, of Cana, died Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the Woltz Hospice Home.
She was born February 2, 1931 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Robert and Martha McMillian Thomas. She was also preceded in death by Charles W. Scott; daughter, Hope Carol Scott; son, Charles Jeffrey Scott; granddaughter, Jolene Melton; sisters, Myrtle Thomas Davenport, Geneva Coe, Sarah Chandler, Hallie Smith and Maggie Brown; and brothers, Sam, Wyse, Roscoe and Rubin Thomas.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Charlene Melton of Mount Airy, N.C., Sharon Sutphin and Karon Thompson, both of Ararat, and Robin Edwards of King, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank Thomas and Jim Thomas, both of Cana, and three sisters-in-law.
The funeral service was conducted Sunday at Salem United Methodist Church in Mount Airy by the Rev. Joseph Kossan. Burial was in the church cemetery.

CHRISTOPHER A. SLATE
Christopher Allen Slate, 40, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on November 10, 1976 to Sheila Hemmings Hull and the late Timothy Allen Slate. He was also preceded in death by an uncle, Douglas Hemmings Jr.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children, Morgan Slate and Lily Slate, and their mother, Terri Patterson, all of King, N.C.; his stepfather, Dale Hull of Mount Airy; his sisters, Amber Mullins of Mount Airy, and Whitney Slate Crawley of Richmond; grandparents, Douglas and Sylvia Hemmings of Mount Airy; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special aunt and uncle.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Kenneth Young officiating.

CARL J. TAYLOR
Carl James Taylor passed away at his home in Winston-Salem, N.C., on February 3, 2017, at nearly 99 years of age.
Born May 2, 1918, in Mount Airy, N.C., Carl was married almost 78 years to the love of his life, Christine Mayberry Taylor, who survives him.
He was a man of deep faith who never knew a stranger or forgot someone who was in need. He had a long career as a salesman for companies including Spencer’s, where he turned his talent for talking to anyone and everyone into sale after sale. His career also took him all around the U.S. with his wife Chris, including Utah, California, Nevada, and North Carolina.
He is also survived by four sons, Todd Taylor (Anne) of Meadows of Dan; Jerry Taylor (Candy) of American Fork, Ut.; Mike Taylor (Penny) of Boone, N.C.; and Randy Taylor of the home; and one sister, Pat Seal of Mount Airy.
Carl left a great legacy with a large and loving family, which also includes 13 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren that live all across the country.
Services will be held Saturday, February 11, at 2 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mount Airy.

ELDRIDGE B. TURNER
Eldridge Buford Turner, 87, of Martinsville, died Saturday, January 28, 2017, at home.
He was born August 23, 1929, in Patrick County and was a son of the late Orie Turner and Eva Moran Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Looney Turner; and a brother, Okie Turner.
He graduated from Fieldale High School and was an insurance agent for Southwestern Life. He served in the United States Air Force and was a member of Fuller Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda T. Smith of Atlanta, Ga.
A funeral service was held Thursday at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Fred Hardin officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

POSEY L. WYATT
Posey Lincoln Wyatt, 84, of Jeb Stuart Road, Martinsville, died on Saturday, January 28, 2017.
He was born on October 5, 1932 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Posey Lester Wyatt and Dossie Belle Tuggle. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Shirleen Jordan; two brothers and one sister.
He had been the city animal control officer. He later became superintendent of the City Farm. Prior to joining the city staff Wyatt had worked for the State of Virginia Department of Corrections for 17 years. He also was in charge of teaching how to handle tracking dogs for the state of Virginia. After retiring he worked part time at Norris Funeral Services.
He is survived by his wife, Reba P. Wyatt of the residence; stepson, Warren Boyd of Martinsville; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held at a later date.
