The Stuart Town Council received an update at its Wednesday, Aug. 19 meeting on the condition of the Star Theatre’s roof, which is undergoing renovations during the building’s temporary closure.

Town Manager Bryce Simmons said condensation had been building up underneath the vinyl siding inside the roof.

“We have since then been able to tear all of that vinyl siding down and remove the insulation that was above it. The condition is not quite as bad as I thought it was going to be originally,” he said.

Simmons said most of the damage is on the wall adjoining the Beasley’s building, with a few areas where the sheathing over the rafters is damaged.

“I’m currently getting quotes from roofers to take a look at replacing the roof. Originally I thought there might have been three layers of roof, however it was plywood on the rafters, asphalt shingles, and then a metal roof that was placed overtop. There is no in between, so I think that does make it a little bit easier to work on,” he said.

Roofers he has spoken with so far have said the project does not appear to be particularly difficult because the roof is not very steep, Simmons said.

“But they have recommended going back with the white rubber roof that would help with offsetting some of that heat that’s being trapped, which we should see less condensation. I also would prefer not to go back with putting the insulation and the vinyl siding back because I think that makes it easier for being able to maintain all of those power systems and cords that are currently exposed,” Simmons said.

The Star Theatre closed in June for renovations and is expected to reopen in October.

The town previously received a $154,556 Virginia Tobacco Regional Revitalization Commission grant for improvements to the theatre, including a professional projector and screen, new stage curtains and replacement of the HVAC system. Work was scheduled to begin in early June.
