The Patrick County Extension Office will host a series of three free workshops designed for caregivers of individuals living with dementia. Each session covers a different topic, and participants may attend one, two, or all three workshops. Sessions will be facilitated by Mountain Valley Hospice.
Dementia Basics
Participants will be introduced to Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care® method, which focuses on the abilities that remain rather than losses caused by dementia. Caregivers will learn strategies for working with individuals living with dementia in ways that promote cooperation, reduce frustration, and improve outcomes.
Date: Wednesday, November 4, 2026
Time: 2-3 p.m.
Understanding Sundowning
This workshop explores sundowning, a common condition in which individuals with dementia become more confused, anxious, or restless during the late afternoon and evening. Participants will learn practical techniques to reduce stress, increase comfort, and create supportive daily routines.
Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2026
Time: 2-3 p.m.
Filling the Day with Meaning
Caregivers will learn how to provide meaningful, engaging, and purposeful activities that help loved ones feel valued and connected. The session will offer ideas for creating positive experiences throughout the day.
Date: Wednesday, December 2, 2026
Time: 2-4 p.m.
