The Patrick County High School JV Cougar baseball team took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of last Tuesday’s game at Magna Vista and maintained its lead for the rest of the game to defeat the Warriors 8-4.
The Cougars picked up a run in the third inning, one in the fourth and two in the fifth before scoring the eighth run in the seventh inning.
The Warriors scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Nick Duncan had three hits and Landon Augustine picked up two. Josh Cockram and Lane Taylor each scored two runs; Augustine, Kelon Penn, McCray Sawyers and Jacob Mullis added one each.
“We didn’t play our best and still got the win,” said Coach Donald Rakes.
The JV Cougars are 9-3 with eight straight wins.
Last Thursday’s game with Halifax was called in the bottom of the third inning due to rain. The score was 6-1 with Halifax in the lead; however, the Cougars had the bases loaded with no outs when the game was called. The game will be continued at that point at a later date, according to Coach Rakes.
This week the JV Cougars played at Blacksburg Monday. They will host Blacksburg today (Wednesday) and will play Martinsville at Southside Park Friday.
