You’ve probably heard the term “fits and starts.” According to various online dictionaries, this means spasmodically, at irregular intervals, one step forward and two steps back, or with little progress.
That’s the way this column has gone. Maybe in an attempt to stay warm during these chilly days, I’ve been drinking too much hot coffee and thus consuming excessive caffeine. For I’ve been like a kid hyped up on candy — can’t keep my thoughts centered on one subject.
I thought about telling stories on the grandson. But he’s nine now; I have to be careful to not embarrass him. Though I sure do think it is cute the way he still refers to my husband as Poohpa (the name the grandson gave him) when we are with family but in a public setting, it is Grandpa.
Another consideration is the Big Birthday that is coming up. You know, the one that declares me an Official Old Person. That time in my life when I sign up for Medicare programs and supplements and medicine cards (and all their parts and plans.) I feel for the people who have to administer these complicated programs. During the years of working for local government, deciphering complex state and federal mandates was a regular task in our office. There were times when I wanted to phone some higher-up and say “for goodness sakes, let’s put all this into perspective.” The Ten Commandments from the Holy Bible that sets out laws to live by is only about a page long.
Or I could talk about the ice storm which played a major role in our lives these past few days. Our little home lies at the base of the mountains so temperatures aren’t quite as cold as the elevated summit in our back door. But nearby views of the mountain ranges capture another world.
Unfortunately, many people have dealt with downed trees, power outages, and even travel issues and vehicular accidents. However, the storm also left behind a stunning landscape. Hillsides of shimmering crystal castles surround us on every side. Though it is likely we will see similar storms in upcoming months, rest assured there are yet some warmer days to come.
But this column will conveniently go to press the day before Thanksgiving. What better opportunity to count our blessings. During Thanksgiving gatherings, many families keep a tradition whereby each person shares something for which they are grateful.
So here’s my really short and perhaps slightly cheeky list. That coffee I mentioned is the first thing I reach for when I get up in the morning and I’m pretty grouchy until I get it. Just ask my husband. The big birthday — I’m just glad to be here and have accessible medical programs to help keep me kicking. Regarding the weather, I’ll gratefully take ours over the horrific fires in California and the hurricanes and flooding on the eastern seaboard. My heart aches for them.
And I am truly grateful for the gift of our grandson (though he is growing up far too quickly) plus my husband, son, daughter-in-law and extended family. The ways in which I am blessed would be impossible to list here.
