LIFES Academy (Lessons in Fundamental and Essential Skills) received its renewed three-year license from the Virginia Department of Education to continue operations as a private day school for middle and high school students, as well as approval to add an elementary program beginning in August.
LIFES provides alternative and individualized education for students to develop life skills and meet Virginia Standards of Learning objectives while preparing them to transition back to their home schools, attend college, or enter the workforce.
To be accredited, private schools must undergo a rigorous review by a recognized Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) member association. LIFES was reviewed by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF).
Its accreditation verifies that it provides a level of excellence in its programs and services and guarantees the transfer of student credits from LIFES to a public school, as well as ensuring recognition of teacher licensure credits for time served in an accredited private day school.
“Being licensed by the Department of Education and accredited by VAISEF speaks to the quality of the programs offered through LIFES Academy,” said director of youth services Cheryl Cobbs.
As part of STEP, Inc. (Solutions That Empower People), the academy was founded in 1995 and is located in Rocky Mount. LIFES is licensed to serve students from all over Virginia. Students can be referred to LIFES Academy by their home school’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team, or they can be parentally-placed.
The philosophy of LIFES is to empower students for success through the combined efforts of students, family, home schools, and community partners. The program offers competitive rates, small classes, licensed lead teachers and trained paraprofessionals, along with nutritious meals, therapeutic day treatment, and a comprehensive life skills component.
