For anyone in search of a new hobby, Surry Community College is offering several quilting workshops throughout the summer.
Quilting has been done for many years and is well known all over the world. It has changed over time, as it began to fill a basic need for warmth, but is now an art form. Today, the art of quilting has become quite popular as there are many more women and men who take up quilting and enjoy the craft. Quilting is a hobby that allows you to add a personal touch, making your next quilt your unique creation.
A Free Motion Machine Quilting Workshop will be held Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain, N.C. In this machine quilting class, learn the basics of free motion quilting along with tips and techniques that will help the student become a fearless free motion quilter.
Pre-registration and pre-payment of $40 are required. Supplies are an additional cost to the student. Please ask for a supply list.
A Hand Quilting Workshop will be held Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Pilot Center. In this class, learn to layer fabrics, properly hoop the piece, and make small even stitches in a variety of patterns and designs. Pre-registration and pre-payment of $40 are required. Supplies are an additional cost. Please ask for a supply list.
Learn to make a Jelly Roll Quilt at a workshop on Saturday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Pilot Center. Begin making this quilt by buying a jelly roll. This is 40 or 42 strips of fabric that are 2.5 inches wide and about 44 inches long.
The fabric in each jelly roll typically comes from one line of fabric. This is a huge plus because it means that all the colors in the quilt will coordinate. Quilt size will be approximately 65” x 70”. Pre-registration and pre-payment of $40 are required. Supplies are an additional cost. Please ask for a supply list.
