The age of our beloved planet is speculated to be around 4.5 billion years old, and for the past 50 years, we have dedicated a day to celebrate the primordial rock we call home.
Earth Day was created to celebrate and raise support for environmental protection in 1970. According to EarthDay.org the event was a response to “an environment in crisis — oil spills, smog, rivers so polluted they literally caught fire.”
The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970 and an approximately 20 million Americans devoted their time to the cause, “The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement and is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event,” according to EarthDay.org. The organization lists volunteering, turning off lights when leaving a room, avoiding plastic shopping bags and single use plastics like disposable water bottles to help protect the environment, and reuse/recycle.
