Fifty Patrick County kids were “on the move” June 20-24 at DeHart Park in Stuart. The children, ages five through 12, were taking part in the 12th annual Kids on the Move day camp sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Children spent their mornings playing physically active games led by adult and teen leaders as well as taking part in craft and nature classes. Breakfast and lunch were provided daily through the USDA Summer Meals program in conjunction with Patrick County Public Schools. Afternoons were spent swimming and playing in the pool at DeHart Park.
On Wednesday morning campers took part in fun and informative classes led by the Stuart Volunteer Fire Department, Jeb Stuart Rescue and the Patrick County Soil and Water Conservation Center.
The first Field Day event was held on Thursday, and campers competed in eight different events such as a Pizza Pizza Relay, water balloon toss and a three-legged race.
On Friday, campers walked to the Farmers’ Market, where they were able to buy fresh local produce and other goodies. Campers were led on their walk downtown by Master Deputy Bryant Pruitt and Sgt. Ricky Rorrer of the Patrick County Sheriff’s Department.
This camp would not be possible without the tremendous support from adult and teen volunteers, instructors and community members who willingly donate their time to help these children. The Extension office is so appreciative of everyone who was involved in this year’s camp.

Bluefield College recognized dozens of outstanding students, including Andrea Armbrester of Stuart, for academic excellence during its year-end Honors Convocation.
Each spring, the college acknowledges academic achievement and service among its students through the capstone awards program. In welcoming students to this year’s ceremony, professors Mimi Merritt and Dr. Bob Boozer spoke about the perseverance of the students being honored and the joy of seeing students succeed. President David Olive spoke about the importance of the year-end event.
“This is a special day in the life of Bluefield College as we recognize students who have performed extraordinarily well this academic year,” said Dr. Olive, “not only in the classroom, but also through the demonstration of service and character outside of the classroom.”
