The Library of Virginia announced that the Circuit Court Records Preservation (CCRP) program awarded Patrick County Circuit Court Clerk, Sherri Hazlewood, a $7,700 grant for local records preservation. The funds were used to restore two of the oldest books housed in the Patrick County Clerk’s Office, Order Book 00 (1971-1800) and Will Book 1 (1791-1826), in addition to Will Book 8 (1884-1905) and Surveyor’s Book 2 (1880-1936). The records have also been digitized so that they can be made available to the public at the viewing stations located in the clerk’s office.
“One of my most fundamental duties as clerk of court is that of record keeper for our county. I am so pleased to have received this generous grant from the Library of Virginia which has allowed me to be able to restore and preserve records dating back to the formation of Patrick County in 1791,” Hazlewood said.
Since 1990, the CCRP has awarded more than 1,000 grants totaling more than $20,000,000. This year, the program awarded $1,222,940.66 to localities to assist the clerks’ offices with their preservation efforts.
The CCRP is a part of the Library of Virginia’s Local Records Services Branch. Funded through a $1.50 portion of the clerk’s recordation fee, the CCRP provides resources to help preserve and make accessible permanent circuit court records stored in the 120 circuit courts and at the Library of Virginia.
