Piedmont Arts’ new STEAM-based Summer Art Camp is filling up quickly. Parents are encouraged to sign their campers up by Friday to reserve a spot in these popular camps.
“We are really excited about the response to our camps this year,” said the museum’s Education Coordinator Becki Williams Vasquez. “It’s great that so many parents and students are taking advantage of these fun and inventive learning opportunities.”
In this month’s camps, campers ages 8-12 will explore a wide range of hands-on, problem-based projects that connect STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to the arts, like printmaking, sculpture, painting and design.
Campers can expect to learn, but more importantly they will have fun experimenting together, pushing their creativity and exploring the world around them.
“STEAM goes beyond a focus on the STEM disciplines and encourages educators and students to understand the importance of the arts in education,” said Williams Vasquez. “Adding the ‘A’ to STEM is more than the addition of an art project, it’s about teaching students to use critical thinking skills to develop creative ways to solve everyday problems. It’s an opportunity to add creativity and fun to the learning process.”
Summer Art Camp for ages 8-12 will be held July 26-29 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day at Piedmont Arts. The cost is $65 for members and $75 for non-members. The registration deadline is Friday, July 22 by noon.
Campers will learn the ins and outs of t-shirt printing—from the construction of the silk screen, to the design process, to printing their own t-shirt. Campers will also learn how sculptors use STEAM to create dynamic pieces of art by making a chair using cardboard that will not only be functional, but also a work of art.
Register for Piedmont Arts Summer Art Camps at the museum, located at 215 Starling Ave., Martinsville, by calling (276) 632-3221 or online at PiedmontArts.org. Advanced registration is required.

Campers will participate in fun, inventive projects like screen printing (pictured), at Piedmont Arts’ Summer Art Camps.
