Kelsey Newman, a 2016 graduate of Bassett High School, has been selected as one of 28 Woodruff Scholars at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
She was chosen as a Woodruff Scholar out of 7,000 applicants and receives a full scholarship, totaling $240,000 over her four years at Emory.
Kelsey plans to combine two of her interests by majoring in music and political science.
At Bassett, she also attended Piedmont Governor’s School, served as senior class president, field commander of the marching band, secretary of the Interact Club, and a member of numerous other organizations involving service, leadership, and academics.
Music is her main focus and she has been named to the All-District Band each year since seventh grade.
Kelsey was the first student from Bassett High School to be selected as an All-Virginia musician for three years of her high school career.
She was also selected as a 2016 All-American Clarinetist in the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.
She spent the summer of 2014 at the Virginia Residential Governor’s School for the Arts and attended the 2015 Interlochen Arts Academy Summer Clarinet Institute.
In 2016, she received the John Phillip Sousa Award, an award reserved for one senior band member each year that recognizes superior musicianship.
Kelsey is the daughter of Danny and Lynanne Newman of Figsboro. She is the granddaughter of Nancy Lindsey of Stuart and Bryant and Linda Lindsey of Morganton, N.C.
