The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office will offer firearms safety classes open to the public on April 17, July 17, Oct. 16 and a special one-day class for women only on Sept. 18.
The classes will exceed the training requirements needed for a concealed handgun permit in Virginia. Primarily for firearms, the classes also will include marksmanship instruction. Half of each 4-hour class is devoted to a discussion about concealed carry laws, justifiable use of deadly force, firearm safety rules and the fundamentals of marksmanship.
Classes are open to U.S. citizens 18 and older. Children from age 12 may participate in the class providing they are registered and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Attendees must bring 25 rounds of ammunition and may use their own handguns or a handgun from the sheriff’s office. Handguns must be unloaded when brought to class.
Classes will be held outside at the sheriff’s office/4-H Club shooting range, 223 Transfer Station Lane in Stuart. Participants are reminded to dress accordingly, and to bring lawn chairs, snacks and drinks.
Registration is due a week before each class by calling the sheriff’s office at (276) 694-3161. The cost is $55 per person, and a criminal background check will be completed on those registering for a class.
For more information, call Sheriff Dan Smith, Lt. Rob Coleman or Sgt. David Haymore at (276) 694-3161.
