A Patrick Springs man was airlifted following a Wednesday night shooting, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
Tony Ray Chaney, 50, of Randolph Lane, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck during an alleged altercation on Anthony Drive, near Randolph Lane.
The call was received at the 911 Communications Center at 9:02 p.m., Smith said.
James Grady Dillon, 70, of Myrtle Lane in Bassett, was quickly identified as a suspect, according to the sheriff.
Dillon and Chaney allegedly had been at odds with one another, according to Smith, who added that Chaney is currently in a relationship with Dillon’s daughter.
Dillon allegedly approached Chaney as he was walking on Anthony Drive. A shot was fired, striking Chaney in the neck. The shooter allegedly then fled in a vehicle.
A lookout regarding Dillon, the suspected shooter, was immediately broadcast to area law enforcement, Smith said.
Patrick and Henry County deputies, along with troopers with the Virginia State Police, began the search. A short time later, Henry County deputies located and confronted the suspected shooter on Willie Craig Road in Bassett, Smith said.
Authorities in Patrick were told by Henry County authorities that the alleged suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot during the confrontation, according to Smith.
Dillon later died from the injury.
Chaney’s condition is currently unknown.
