The Town of Stuart is in good condition financially, Mayor Ray Weiland said at the Wednesday, July 21 meeting.
The town currently has $2.7 million in the bank and a current indebtedness of $3.894 million.
“We brought in a nice chunk of income, but that could be due to some of these conditional infrastructural money we’ve received this past year,” he said.
Stuart also recently received around $659,800 for infrastructure from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
“That money is to be specifically spent on infrastructure-type projects, and luckily we just so happen to need a few sewer lines put in. So, we will have a perfect spot to spend the money,” Weiland said, and added the town will hopefully be able to continue doing projects and working on those on the council’s wish list.
“As time goes on, we’ll be able to pay for some of those items as well,” he added.
In other matters, the council:
*Heard an update from Town Manager Terry Tilley about the sewer plant project.
*Scheduled a blight ordinance committee meeting for Thursday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m.
*Discussed filling John “Mac” Deekens’ council seat. Weiland encouraged interested town residents to call the Town Office and leave their name and a short description on why they would like to be on the council. Town Attorney Christopher Corbett said applicants do not have to be a taxpayer but must have their living residence within the town of Stuart.
*Paid the bills as amended.
*Discussed making food trucks pay a meals tax.
*Discussed the candidates for the next town manager.
