Surry Community College will offer North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Program courses—suitable to students of all skill levels—in early October right before the autumn leaves hit their peak, and motorcyclists want to hit the roads to enjoy the fall scenery.
The Basic Rider Course will be offered October 7-9. The 22-hour training course teaches the skills necessary to operate a motorcycle in traffic. It consists of both classroom and driving range activities.
Motorcycles are provided for the course. Each site has a limited supply of helmets in various sizes; if possible, bring your own helmet to the riding portion of the course. The class will meet on Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. then Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The registration fee is $167.
The Experienced Rider Course will be offered Saturday, October 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This class is for people that have been riding for a while. It is a great way to learn more about your riding abilities, safety tips, and the capabilities of your motorcycle.
Students interested in attending must possess a valid motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement to their license. A motorcycle learner’s permit is also acceptable. It is recommended that you have at least six months of riding experience or 3,000 miles under your belt.
You must provide a street legal, properly licensed motorcycle for the range of exercises, as well as show proof of insurance. Your bike must also pass a visual safety inspection on the morning of the class. If you normally carry a passenger, you may take the Experienced Rider Course with your passenger on board. The registration fee is $75.
Both courses will be held at the Driving Range at Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, N.C. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Seats are limited. Call (336) 386-3473 or (336) 386-3398 for more information. You can also go to surry.edu/motorcycle for more information.
