The William Campbell Generals trounced the Patrick County High School Cougar football team last Friday night in Naruna, scoring two times on their first three possessions while holding off the Cougars for most of the night. The final score was 46-7.
The lone Cougar score came in the opening moments of the second half. The Cougars received the second half kickoff and returned the ball to the General’s 30 yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Logan Hutchens galloped downfield to cross the goal line. Ethan Harkey’s PAT was good. The score was then 32-7.
The Generals made good on several “big” plays that opened up the scoring early. The first touchdown came on a 48-yard run; the second on a 19-yard rush, and the third score came on a 25-yard pass.
Late in the first half, William Campbell scored on a 38-yard run and a fumble recovery which resulted in a 38-yard romp to their end zone.
The score was 32-0 at the half.
The Cougars received the second-half kickoff and scored three plays later on Hutchens’ 20-yard run.
The Generals scored two more times before time ran out. They scored on a 38-yard run—which involved a fumble in the middle of the run that was recovered and then run in. The final TD came with 9:02 left in the game on a 15-yard run.
The Cougars had one more opportunity to score late in the game when they recovered a fumble, and repeated penalties by the Generals moved the ball closer to the Cougar goal line, but time ran out.
The final score was 46-7.
Logan Hutchens picked up 78 yards in the air while Tyler Stanley completed two passes for 36 yards.
Matthew Amos had 71 yards on three pass receptions.
Tyvin Martin picked up 42 yards on six carries. Colt Martin had five on three, while Logan Hutchens was 9-15. Colt Martin had 34 yards on two receptions.
The Cougars host George Washington of Danville this Friday night at 7 p.m.
