The Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties, N.C., will hold its next meeting on Sunday, October 9 at 2:30 p.m. at the Madison-Mayodan, N.C. Public Library. Bill Spencer will be the featured speaker.
Many times, society members been asked why so many Stokes and Rockingham County residents moved south to Randolph County, N.C. It seems that those who moved wanted to use their Stokes and Rockingham knowledge of growing tobacco on a little flatter land.
Alfred Spencer settled in Seagrove, N.C., farming for a period of time. In the 1940s he turned to his Stokes County recipe for pinto beans and opened the Mountain View Canning Company. GSRS member Bill Spencer will relate how this canning company grew to become the well-known Luck’s Cannery.
Everyone is welcome at the genealogical meetings. Bring a friend and join us. Light refreshments will be served, and anyone wishing to help out with the refreshments may bring a snack and/or drink.
