Mr. Richard “Dick” Gerald Marsh, age 95 of Woolwine, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 14, 2021, at SOVAH Hospital of Martinsville, and Mrs. Lenora Hall Marsh, age 93 of Woolwine, joined him in Heaven on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at SOVAH Hospital of Martinsville.
Mr. Marsh was born in Elmira, New York on June 13, 1926, to the late Harry Joseph Marsh and Bertha Mae Angell Marsh. Mrs. Marsh was born in Elmira, New York on July 26, 1928, to the late Luther Lee Hall and Mary Elizabeth Lawrence Hall. In addition to their parents, they were preceded in death by one son, David Eugene Marsh; one son-in-law, R. Carl Grover; Mr. Marsh’s siblings, Harry Joseph Marsh, Jr, and Phyllis Marsh Smith; and Mrs. Marsh’s siblings, Luther Lee Hall, Jr. and Edward Hall.
Mr. Marsh faithfully served in the United States Army during World War II, where he drove a tank. He was a member of the American Legion Post 154 in Elmira, New York, and volunteered with the Van Etten Fire Department in Van Etten, New York. He retired from U.S. Steel after 38 years of service. He enjoyed racing cars with his son, David, camping, tinkering, and playing a good practical joke. He was known for his beautiful singing voice and athletic ability (having played semi-pro football in his younger years). Dick truly loved his family and was a devoted husband who was known to check on his wife several times daily saying, “Lenora, are you okay?” and after she would affirm, she was indeed okay he would then ask, “Am I okay?”
Mrs. Marsh served as the department manager of the bookstore at Cornell University for several years. She was known for her artistic ability; she enjoyed painting, knitting, and crocheting; and especially enjoyed coloring on her tablet. She too had a wonderful singing voice, served as church choir director, and was known for her singing to her cats. She was very supportive wife and served as a leader of the color guard for her husband’s drill team, making the uniforms and helping in any way possible. She was devoted wife, awesome mother, loving grandmother, sister and friend, kind, compassionate, and generous person.
The Marshes shared 74 years of marriage, devoted to the Lord, each other, and their family. Both were members of the Fairystone Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling and shared a love of animals. It is a great comfort knowing mama and daddy are together strolling over Heaven.
Mr. and Mrs. Marsh are survived by three daughters, Rhonda Grover of Stuart, Yvonne Hughes and husband, William of Stuart, and Shelley Roberts and husband, James of Woolwine; eight grandchildren, Thomas Grover and wife, Wendy, Jeffrey Grover and wife, April, Frederick Kroplin and wife, Samantha, Ariel Weiss and husband, Tyler, Savannah Roberts, Randy Marsh and wife, Glenda; Ryan Marsh and wife, Brandice, and Richard Marsh and wife, Jessica; and eleven great-grandchildren, Mrs. Marsh’s brother, Martin Hall and wife, Diane of Byrdstown, Tennessee, and nieces and nephews.
