Elsie Rakes Pendleton, age 97, of Stuart, died on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick County in Stuart.
She was born on January 6, 1919 in the Poplar Camp section of Patrick County, a daughter of the late Thomas Homer and Cassie Lena Brammer Rakes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delmar J. Pendleton; a son, John R. Pendleton; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Vera Pendleton Harbour and G. Wesley Harbour; a sister, Gladys Rakes Lovell; brothers, Clyde, Alvin, Davis, George “Jink,” and Falis “Faye” Rakes; and grandparents, George and Caroline Thomas Brammer, and Dennis and Nancy Via Rakes.
Surviving are four daughters and five sons: Elva Pendleton, Shirley P. Harris (J.E.), Larmie P. Hylton (Arnold), Judy P. Kidd (Bob), Jim, Gary, Gerald, Dan (Sherry), and Ron Pendleton, and a daughter-in-law, Jean Pendleton (John); one brother, Glen Rakes, and four sisters, Ada R. Rakes, Frances R. Lyon, Elaine R. Adkins, and Lorene R. Guilliams (James); eight grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, seven step-great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Wednesday night at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, immediately before the funeral at 7:30 p.m. Pastor David Kamoda officiated. A private burial at Jack’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Woolwine was held February 4.
