The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar basketball team finished out a three-game week with an away win over Halifax last Friday night. The Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Comets 37-40. However, in two other games earlier in the week, PC lost—to Martinsville 51-42 Tuesday and to Abingdon 68-43.
“We played an excellent game against Halifax, sharing the ball and working together to hold onto a win,” said Coach Jessica Martin.
The Lady Cougars took an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter and upped the lead to 21-15 at the half.
The Lady Comet defense stalled Patrick County’s offense in the third, holding PC to only four points while adding 12 points from their own offensive effort.
The Lady Cougars held on to their two-point lead at the beginning of the final quarter and took the win by three points, 37-40.
Autumn Hubbard led scorers with seven points and three steals. Melanie Roberson scored six points, had two rebounds and three assists. Kaleigh Griffith also added six points and had 11 rebounds. Abby Carter was the third Lady Cougar to score six points; she added four rebounds.
Last Tuesday the Lady Cougars hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Martinsville and lost 51-42.
Both teams played defensive ball in the opening quarter with the Cougars leading 7-6 at the end of the period.
The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Lady Cougars 21-15 in the offensive battle in the second period and cranked up their defense in the third to hold PC to nine points to their 18.
The Lady Cougars mounted an offensive battle in the closing moments of the game while holding the Lady Bulldogs on defense, but could not capture the lead, losing 51-42.
Melanie Roberson and Kaleigh Griffith led Lady Cougar scorers with seven points each. Griffith had five rebounds and six assists.
Wednesday, Patrick County hosted Abingdon and had a difficult time offensively, making only one basket in the opening quarter. The Lady Falcons out-manned PC and scored 27 points in the first period.
The Lady Falcon defense continued in the second period, holding PC to five points while adding 20, leaving the score 47-7 at the half.
Patrick County scored 36 points in the second half, but could not catch up from the huge half-time deficit. The final score was 68-43.
Autumn Hubbard scored eight points; Sydnee Burnette and Abby Carter each added six.
The Lady Cougar play three games this week. Monday they hosted Hidden Valley High School. Thursday, they travel to Tunstall and Friday, they host Magna Vista.
