Madgie Vashtie Handy Thomas

Madgie Vashtie Handy Thomas, age 92 of Patrick Springs, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the home of her sister. She was born in Patrick County on October 9, 1931, to the late Thomas Talmadge Handy and Oda Stone Handy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Jackson Handy; infant twin siblings, Sheldon and Shelby Handy; a half-sister, Vera Mae Handy Harp; and a great nephew, Mathew Turner. She grew up on a farm in Patrick County where she enjoyed helping her parents. She retired from Bassett-Walker and later worked at K-Mart in Martinsville and High Point, North Carolina as a buyer. She was of the holiness faith and was a member of County Line Church of God of Prophecy. She truly enjoyed traveling, growing her roses, and caring for her many pets.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by a sister, Judy Barbour (Ken) of Patrick Springs; and five nephews whom she loved, Len Turner, Lane Turner (Debbie), Tommy Handy, Timmy Handy and Terry Handy (Louise).

A memorial service for Mrs. Thomas will be held Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Chaplain Jeff Pendleton officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030.
