The Patrick County High Lady Cougars avenged a season opening loss at Bassett on December 4 with a defensive gem, in a 51-26 win. Playing at home for the first time this season on December 16, the Lady Cougars took the lead in the game’s opening minute and never looked back.
The Lady Cougar defense was great all night, creating turnovers, clogging passing lanes and never allowing Basset to get into any rhythm offensively. The Lady Cougars’ defense limited Bassett to five points in each of the first two quarters, resulting in a 17-point deficit at halftime (27-10).
With their defensive pressure never letting up, the Lady Cougars maintained their lead in the third quarter, then extended it, out-scoring Bassett 14-6 in the fourth quarter for the 25 point victory.
After the game, Lady Cougar head coach Tony Mosley was happy with the way his team played defense on the night, adding, “we stress defense.”
Another bright spot for the Lady Cougars was their ability to come down with rebounds against the bigger Bassett players. “We’ve been working on that,” said coach Mosley. “Lilly Hazelwood did a great job on their bigs tonight,” and Kimora Wimbush, “she was amazing.”
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was Lilly Hazelwood with 14 points and Kimora Wimbush with 13.
