The Patrick County High Lady Cougar volleyball team opened up their 2025 season with a big home win against Bassett on August 26. The Lady Cougars won in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16, 26-24.
After a back and forth start to the first set, the Lady Cougars got a boost from a 9-1 run to pull out to a 12-5 lead. Patrick County was solid throughout the first set, giving away very few easy points, making it difficult for Bassett to mount any meaningful runs.
Throughout the match, the Lady Cougars showed tremendous hustle, making many diving plays to keep points alive. “When you see them giving everything, it’s a lot of fun and knowing they’re doing it for their team to make sure the ball doesn’t hit the floor,” said head coach Heidi Moore.
Bassett would come out strong in the second set, taking an early 1-4 lead, only to have the Lady Cougars go on an 8-1 run to take a four-point lead at 9-5. That’s as close as Bassett would get in the set, with Patrick County pulling away for a nine-point, 25-16 set win.
The third set stayed close, with the Lady Cougars trailing by one at 17-18. Bassett would increase the lead to 19-23, just two points from the set win, but the Lady Cougars came back with a 6-1 run to finish the set 26-24.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was Brooklyn Barner with 7 kills. Journey Moore finished with 6 kills, 11 digs and 2 aces. Jayden Callahan added 6 kills, 8 digs and 2 aces, and Jenna Woods had 12 digs.
Coach Moore was happy with the opening night win, but also acknowledged there is work to be done. “I think it’s a good starting point, so we can see where we are. We definitely have some work to do, but it gives us a good idea of what we need to work on.”
The Lady Cougars play their next four games on the road before returning home to face Radford on September 16.
