Girl Scout troop 1302 held a special event on October 17. Master Naturalist Norma Bozenmayer led a Division of Wildlife program on “Living with Black Bears,” where the girls learned about black bear behavior and how to behave during an encounter.

Most importantly they learned how to avoid inviting black bears to their property by removing bird feeders from March to November, and keeping pet food and garbage out of bears reach. They also learned that hungry bears this time of year are trying to double their body weight. All they want is food, food, food, and they will eat berries, bugs, acorns, trash … almost anything else, including dirty baby diapers.

Black bears are beautiful wild animals we should enjoy them from a distance. The program also included a delicious meal and swag making.

The troop is led by Dee Ragsdale, Mary Handy, Olivia Booth, Kaitlyn Cobler, Marcia Booth, Amanda Wikstrom, and Cathy Natoli (service unit manager).
