Beginning Spring 2026, Surry Community College will bring college-level instruction directly to Mount Airy High School through its Career & College Promise (CCP) program.
Local high school students will have the opportunity to earn college credits at Surry Community College’s Mount Airy Education Building at Mount Airy High School, thanks to the new Student Success Center. Students from Mount Airy High School, North Surry High School, East Surry High School, Millennium Charter Academy, home school and private school students are encouraged to take classes at this new college location, which is on the second floor of the Student Success Center.
The initiative marks a major step in expanding access to higher education for local students. Through CCP, eligible high school juniors and seniors take tuition-free courses that count toward both high school graduation and college credentials.
Dr. David Shockley, President of Surry Community College, said, “We are thrilled to offer Career & College Promise (CCP) classes right at Mount Airy High School at our new location. This partnership removes barriers for students by providing convenient access to college courses. It’s an investment in their future—helping them accelerate toward a degree or career while still in high school.”
SCC partnered with Mount Airy City Schools to completely renovate the top floor of the Student Success Center, which houses the college’s Mount Airy Education Building where CCP classes will be held in what was formerly the old junior high school. The transformation included removing all old furniture and lockers, demolishing outdated cabinets, and repainting the entire floor. SCC also installed new flooring, upgraded lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures, and added a modern drop ceiling. The HVAC system was replaced to improve comfort and efficiency, and three standard classrooms along with one science room and an office were furnished with brand-new furniture. New window treatments were installed to complete the refreshed, contemporary look. This renovation has resulted in a bright, modern learning environment designed to support college-level instruction and community education.
In addition to serving high school students during the day, the Mount Airy Education Building will be open in the evenings for the public to attend SCC classes, expanding access to higher education for the entire community. The schedule for the evening classes will be announced at a later date.
This spring, students will have access to a variety of college-level courses, including Art Appreciation (ART-111), Introduction to Computers (CIS-110), World Civilizations I (HIS-111), World Civilizations II (HIS-112), Statistical Methods I (MAT-152), General Psychology (PSY-150), and Principles of Financial Accounting (ACC-120). These courses provide options for both college transfer pathways and career-focused programs, giving students a strong start toward their academic and professional goals. Students interested in enrolling should contact their high school counselors or Surry Community College’s Student Services staff to confirm eligibility and secure a spot.
Career & College Promise (CCP) is a statewide dual enrollment program that allows qualified North Carolina high school students to take college courses tuition-free. CCP provides structured pathways leading to college transfer or career credentials, reducing the cost of higher education and accelerating students’ progress toward degrees and employment.
