On Jan. 25, Virginia Tech’s Reynolds Homestead will launch its homestead artisan series, a new collection of beginner-friendly, hands-on art classes designed to help participants discover art, one step at a time. Built around the belief that art is for everyone, and no experience is needed, the series offers four unique monthly workshops from January to April. Each experience is a make-and-take class, guiding attendees through crafting a finished piece that can be taken home the same day. Participants can enroll in individual workshops or save fees by bundling out the four offerings for $140.
Melanie Gilbert, Reynolds Homestead assistant manager of community engagement programs, said, “This series is rooted in the idea that art belongs to everyone — it’s hands-on, welcoming, and built around community.”
The series will begin with Burned Hats on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Under the guidance of artist Linda Wilson, participants will burn a design onto the hat of their choice and embellish it with feathers, charms, and other decorative elements.
In February’s class, Introduction to Creating Alcohol Ink, participants will learn beginner techniques, experiment with color blending, and create unique abstract pieces full of movement and expression. Instructor Ginnie Conaway will lead the class from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22.
Artist Karen Sigmon will lead the March class introducing the fundamentals of pen and ink drawing. On Saturday, Mar. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will learn line techniques, shading methods, and simple approaches to composition.
On Sunday, Apr. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., Erin Simons of Laurel Ridge Studios will teach how to make a functional, hand whisk broom. In this workshop, attendees will learn traditional broom making techniques required to craft one turkey wing whisk broom and one cake tester. Crafted to create a fan shape, turkey wing whisks are great tools for cleaning all types of surfaces. Cake testers are made from the cut off, so that no material is wasted.
Individuals of all experience levels are invited to participate in the homestead artisan series, designed to provide accessible and hands-on creative experiences. Space is limited for each workshop, and registration is open. Details, class fees, and more information can be found on the Reynolds Homestead website.
