Rick Swink, who was elected in November to represent the Smith River District on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors, has resigned.

Swink, who took office in January, attended two meetings before submitting a letter of resignation dated Feb. 11.

“I am writing to formally resign my position … effective Saturday, February 28,” Swink wrote.

“Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation, and let me know what steps the Board wishes me to complete prior to my departure. I am happy to assist with transition of any files, responsibilities, or hand-over to ensure that the District and county operations are not adversely impacted. I would also appreciate confirmation of the date the Board officially records the vacancy,” he said, adding, “Thank you for the opportunity to serve our community.”

After learning of the resignation, board Chairman Andrew Overby said he planned to contact Susan Taylor “to see what we have to do to have a new supervisor election.”

Overby said he believes a special election would be held in November. In the interim, he anticipates the board will follow past procedure by accepting applications and appointing an interim representative until the election.

Swink did not respond to calls for comment.
