Tom Perry’s Laurel Hill Publishing has released a new book titled, “And Rest Under The Shade Of The Trees: Essays In Honor Of James I. Robertson, Jr.”
The book honors the late Civil War historian and preeminent Stonewall Jackson biographer James I. “Bud” Robertson, Jr., by bringing together a collection of essays that explore several aspects of the Civil War that were subjects of Bud’s long and productive career of research, writing, and teaching, Perry wrote.
From the high-ranking generals of the Civil War, to the gritty experiences of the soldiers in the ranks, to the travails of the civilians on the home front, this volume sheds new light on topics Bud might well have addressed had he lived longer, topics such as the real cause of Stonewall Jackson’s death, a true understanding of the operational possibilities at the end of the Battle of Gettysburg, or the memory of the Confederacy in modern America, he said, and added that in addition, the book includes several reminiscences of Bud and his career, including his advisory role in the planning of the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.
Perry explained that several months ago, he attended the Lynchburg Civil War Roundtable to hear an old friend, Michael Hardy, speak about his new book, “Feeding Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.”
“That night, I had dinner with two Liberty University history professors who were trying to get their book in honor of James I. Robertson, Jr. of Virginia Tech. I jumped at the chance to publish a book honoring a man who changed my life,” Perry said.
He also included a “Publisher’s Note at the end of the book about Bud Robertson. The book includes essays by friends such as Brian S. “Catfish” Wills, Emory Thomas, and William C. ‘Jack’ Davis. Other essays are about James Powers Smith, who erected many markers on the Fredericksburg battlefields; an essay about how Bud helped Jackie Kennedy plan her husband’s funeral in 1963, based on Abraham Lincoln’s funeral in 1865; and an Epilogue by Bud’s wife, Betty.”
