Patrick County High School Senior Beta Club members attended the Virginia State Beta Convention, held February 12-13 at the Doubletree Hotel and Convention Center in Williamsburg. The students entered many categories of competition, which were separated by grade level, and brought home several awards.
Winners included Beta Club members Cole Bottorff, who placed third in Science Division I, Allison Boyd, and Jessica Bryant, who placed second in the character skit.
Sydnee Burnette ran for state secretary. Casey Campbell won in Science Division II and also placed first in Quiz Bowl. Leticia Campos placed second in the character skit; Reanna Carico, Katherine Connor, Ella Cooper and Ashley Dalton won in Quiz Bowl; and Helen Dawson won in creative writing.
Lorena Delgado, Allison Eames and Sidney Easter placed second in character skit. Adam Fain, Evan Goins, Ethan Harkey and Trevor Hazelwood placed third in Social Studies Division II and placed first in Quiz Bowl. Matthew Holt, Aubrey Hopkins and Sierra Hutchens placed second in the character skit.
Marvin Kilgore, Hannah Martin, Chaney Merritt, Duncan Merritt, Ashlee Mesot and Brooke Michaud placed second in the character skit. Korathena Mitchell placed second in fiber arts, Omar Molina-Aguirre was first in digital photography, and Michaela Queen and Amber Scott placed second in character skit.
Quinton Shipps and Faith Stowe placed second in character skit, Madison Stowe, Kori Tarpley, Oceana Torres, Taylor Vernon, William Wilson competed and Emily Wood placed second in photography. Nathaniel Wright placed first in Math Division I and Quiz Bowl, and Ashton Young was third in drawing)
The PCHS Senior Beta Club received the Scholastic Sweepstakes Award for the first time since 2006 at this year’s state competition. Sponsors of the club include Jonathan Turchek and Katherine Shockley.
