Blaise Brian Mooney of Flat Rock, North Carolina, entered heaven on the morning of May 17, 2026. He suffered a major cardiac event and within two weeks made the transition from this world to the next. Four Seasons Hospice Palliative Care provided exceptional support for Brian and his family.
Brian was born in Albany, New York on July 3, 1938, and was the only son of Blaise Bate Mooney and Mary Howard Clark Mooney. In 1961, he married Sara Anne Ray of Lawsonville, NC and together he and the love of his life enjoyed many adventures together. This wonderful couple created a home full of love and encouragement where each member was allowed to forge their own path.
The current family remaining includes Brian’s wife Sara, a daughter, Jean Mooney and grandson, John Samuel Mooney of Charlotte, North Carolina, a son, Dr. Blaises Patrick Mooney and wife Cyre of Tampa, Florida, three grandsons, Scotty Mooney, engaged to Sophia Cochran, newlywed Carpenter Mooney and wife Macy, and youngest son Turner Mooney, a grad student at UF-Gainesville.
Additional family for Brian includes his beloved neighbors Carl and Joan Jones who have been two of his closest friends for 33 years. Additionally, Brian had a friendly chess rivalry in his years long friendship with Bob Herrmann.
Brian graduated from Stuart High School and attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute earning a degree in Industrial Engineering. Brian’s son Blaise describes his dad, with the following words: Dad was an engineer by trade and this profession served him well. He was always looking for new and better ways to perform tasks and fix things. He firmly believed that all things, even broken items which most people would throw away, were still very useful. He felt the same way about people. One of the best bits of advice that he gave to me growing up was “always try to learn something from everyone you meet”
Brian was also an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing and exploring western North Carolina. He had tremendous respect for nature and ultimately put down his fishing rods and guns in favor of conservation and protecting the animals and fish which he spent most of his life observing.
Brian’s wife Anne says that he is missed and loved beyond measure. Brian and I share many memories together dating back to when we first met at Hanging Rock Park during our high school days. These loving memories and my faith will carry me through this tremendous loss.
Brian’s daughter Jean remembers how her Dad loved to celebrate birthdays and Christmas. He loved North Carolina mountains, streams and waterfalls. He knew every tree, plant and flower. He made countless sacrifices and offered encouragement for John and me to pursue our dreams. He had the best laugh and could be ultra serious or up to antics.
The Mooney family loves and misses greatly the amazing husband, Dad, Grandpa and Papa that was in Brian Mooney. During Brian’s life, he served as an engineer, realtor, land developer, conservationist, and creator of Greenbriar Subdivision, but to us he was the family man who made sacrifices in order to bring us a meaningful life.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held at a later date.
