The Patrick County High School Cougar baseball team won two road games this week, defeating George Washington of Danville Tuesday 8-7 and pulling out a 2-1 win over Floyd Wednesday.

Tuesday’s game at GW was a fairly evenly matched game until the sixth inning when the Cougars took the lead for good. The Cougars were trailing in the top of the sixth when Andrew Collins doubled, driving in two runs.

The Eagles scored five runs in the fourth inning, and the Cougars added one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to edge ahead 8-7.

Aaron Pack took the win on the mound. He went two and a third innings, giving up one run, two hits and striking out three batters. Austin Vernon recorded the last three outs to earn the save. Seth Scott started out on the mound pitching three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs, four hits while striking out three batters.

William Wood and Andrew Collins each drove in two runs to lead the Cougars.

In Wednesday’s game, the Cougars took the lead in the second inning with one run scored and held the lead until the Buffaloes scored in the fourth inning. The game was tied 1-1 until the Cougars took the lead on an error in the eighth to win 2-1.

The first score in the game came when Austin Vernon drove in a run on a single.

Strong pitching by both teams was present in Wednesday’s game. Dylan Phillips struck out six batters while Floyd’s pitchers struck out 11 Cougars.

Phillips took the win on the mound for Patrick County, throwing eight innings allowing one run, five hits, striking out six and walking one.

Evan Hopkins, Seth Scott, Colby Vernon and Austin Vernon each had one hit for the Cougars.

The Cougars hosted Bassett Tuesday afternoon. They will host Floyd today (Wednesday) and will travel to Magna Vista Friday.
