The Patrick County High School Lady Cougars picked up two wins last week by outscoring their opponents 29 runs to the opponents’ one run. PC defeated George Washington of Danville 19-1 and the Floyd Lady Buffaloes 10-0.
In Tuesday’s game at GW of Danville, the Lady Cougars scored seven runs on eight hits in the first inning and added four more runs in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth. The lone Lady Eagle score came in the fifth inning.
Makenzie Watts and Savannah Moorefield led Lady Cougar batters with three hits each and one RBI each. Melanie Roberson had five RBIs and Zoe Hutchens had three. Roberson scored four runs.
“We had a great team effort in this game,” said Coach Roger Wilson. “Every batter reached base, and we had several girls who had multiple runs.”
Cassidy Largen started on the mound striking out four of six batters. Hannah Beasley came in and got the win with three innings of work. She recorded five strikeouts and allowed one run off three hits.
“This was Hanna’s first official time back in the circle since her 10th grade season,” Coach Roger Wilson said. “After having surgery in January and undergoing radiation and chemo treatments all last spring, she has been working to get back in the circle. We are very proud of her and all her efforts in the preseason/offseason,” Wilson added. “We look forward to seeing more innings of work from her,” said Wilson.
Wednesday, the Lady Cougars hosted Floyd and scored nine runs in the first inning. They added the 10th run in the third inning to set the mercy rule into play since the Lady Buffaloes failed to get a runner across the plate in five innings.
Savannah Moorefield had three hits, scored two runs and had one RBI. Melanie Roberson had two hits, scored two runs and had one RBI. Zoe Hutchens and Morgan Biggs each had two hits, scored one run and had two RBIs.
“This was another good home victory for the Lady Cougars,” Wilson said.
Cassidy Largen and Josie Pendleton combined to have a no-hitter. Largen threw four innings and struck out eight of 13 batters. Pendleton came in and saw three batters; two were ground outs to the shortstop and one strikeout. Floyd had only one batter reach and that was due to a walk given up by Largen.
The Lady Cougars played at home against Bassett Tuesday. They travel to Floyd today (Wednesday) and travel to Magna Vista Friday.
