Ricky Vernon and Trish Grogan, a popular couple at the “Dance to Remember,” participated in the waltz, swing and bachata competitions.Mike Gravely and Stephanie Vipperman won the People’s Choice Award by collecting the most votes in the form of dollars—more than $800 of them—to donate to the cause. They also danced in the shag competition.Jim Hazelwood and Debbie Tatum won the bachata competition and along with their fellow dancers, demonstrated what the bachata is. The event was the brainchild of Debbie, who volunteers with the Alzheimer’s Group.Jonathan Clark and Carrie Atchley were the winners in the waltz competition, and also participated in the swing and bachata contests. Other participants in the “Dance to Remember” included Jim Allen and Jayme Conner, Wayne and Wanda Wilson, Billy Gammons and Wendy Rudd, and Jim Oxford and Lisa Haskins.Chris and Anna Lester won the shag competition at the “Dance to Remember,” and also participated in the swing and bachata contests. The evening was a special event not only for the dancers, but also for the onlookers and toe-tappers who enjoyed the music, homemade hors d’oeuvres and wine provided by Stanburn Winery.Colby Vernon and Britini Vaughn won the swing competition at the dance Saturday, and also competed in the waltz and bachata contests. Other dances highlighted at the “Dance to Remember” were rumba, shag, bolero, lyrical, tango and disco. Sally Smith, a founding member of the Alzheimer’s Group, said she hopes to make the dance an annual event. She expressed special thanks to the volunteers who work for Alzheimer’s patients and to the LaNota Dance Company, which provided instruction and encouragement to the dancers.Billy Gammons and Wendy Rudd were among the talented dancers who participated in “A Dance to Remember,” a fund-raiser for the Patrick County Alzheimer’s Group LLC, at the Historic Star Theatre Saturday night.
