Algie Lewis Spencer, age 93, of Woolwine, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016, at The Landmark Center in Stuart.
He was born on June 22, 1923, and was a son of the late George C. Spencer and Alice Shough Spencer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann Clark Spencer; a sister, Louise Hall; and seven brothers, Richard, Amos, Frank, Cecil, Homer, Raymond, and James Spencer.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II; was a longtime member of Woolwine United Methodist Church; and was a member of American Legion Post #105.
He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had been a vocational agriculture teacher at Woolwine High School for 19 years, principal at Woolwine High School for three years, vocational director at Patrick County High School for six years, and visiting teacher at the School Board Office for 14 years. He retired in 1990 with 42 years of service in the Patrick County Public School System.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Stuart Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Jeff Spencer of Woolwine; and four grandchildren, Morgan Owen and husband John, Spencer Smith, Jacob Smith, and Molly Cribari and husband Nathaniel.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 22, at Woolwine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandy Wright officiating. Burial was in the Woolwine Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.
