Following a public hearing, the Patrick County Supervisors on Monday voted to amend the current Dog Ordinance and replace the one, two, and three year dog licenses with a $20 lifetime license.
The licenses will be for sale starting in November.
They are good for the lifetime of the dog, providing the ownership does not change and the rabies vaccine remains current. The licenses also are non-transferrable and non-refundable.
Some speakers asked about a provision for a discount in cases of aged or senior dogs.
Lock Boyce, Mayo River District supervisor, said “we can’t do that” because it would become too complicated. “The whole impetus was to cut back on paper work and labor in the Treasurer’s Office” while saving the county money, he said.
Currently, “it’s costing the county a lot of money to sell these tags and buy these tags,” Boyce said. “Pony up and pay the $20 to be legal and have a licensed dog in Patrick County.”
All supervisors supported the proposal to amend the ordinance.
There are no changes to kennel and vicious dog licenses.
