Four art classes are scheduled to be held at the newly-opened Creative Arts Center in Stuart, located at 334 Patrick Avenue.
The center shares space with the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce, and provides better access to art classes for local residents.
Classes will open to the public 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Attendees are welcome to bring food and drink with them to enjoy while creating art.
Registration for classes is required, as most have a minimum and maximum number of students that can be handled. Register by calling the Reynolds Homestead at 276-694-7181 or downloading forms from the website: www.reynoldshomestead.vt.edu.
The Art of Collage – Local collage artist Ursula Allen will be instructing this two-day class to be held September 26 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CAC. The cost of the class is $25.
Allen will explore collage as an art form. Participants will learn the secrets behind creating a compelling composition and how to use diverse materials to create a powerful statement. Learn more about visual balance, the importance of color, the relationship between sizes and shapes, and bringing the whole work together in a visually coherent and interesting way.
The first day will explore these concepts as you choose your materials and begin drafting a layout. On the second day, you will work to assemble it into a unique and interesting work of art. Allen will have materials on hand for students to use, but if you have any interesting papers, photos, or images you would like to use, please bring them.
Beginner Stained Glass – This four week series will be held Mondays in October, beginning October 9. Classes will also meet October 16, 23, and 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
No experience is needed to learn the art of stained glass in this course taught by Aleen Wilson. Participants will receive step-by-step instruction on cutting glass, pattern preparation, glass selection, foil technique, soldering, and finishing a project.
The class fee of $150 includes use of tools and all materials including glass.
Introduction to Alcohol Inks – Artist Cindy Howe will hold an introductory Alcohol Inks class at the Center on Sunday, October 22 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Alcohol inks are a fun medium to work with for anyone; no artistic experience is required. In this class each student will practice on several substrates – tile, metal, plastic and paper, with the final project of creating a landscape on paper.
All materials and inks are included in the $28 fee for the class.
Painting with Grace
Plan to reserve the second Friday of each month for a fun painting class with Grace Helms, art instructor for Patrick County schools. Each student will follow her lead in creating a monthly-themed painting that can be proudly displayed at home or given as a gift.
The classes will kick-off on October 13 with a pumpkin-themed painting that can be an excellent seasonal decoration for use through Thanksgiving.
Another important element to Helms’ classes is the socializing that takes place. Creating art in a group environment should be fun and full of laughter. Participants are invited to bring a favorite snack or appetizer to share with the group. Kick off the weekend with a fun evening with friends or family – or make new friends as you explore your artistic side during the classes held from 6 to 8 p.m. The monthly cost is $30 per person.
