The Back2School event is held in Patrick County and other surrounding counties and was deemed a success. Students participating in the event receive a new pair of shoes and socks. Volunteers wash students feet and talk with them about their hopes and dreams.
Each student also received a new backpack filled with school supplies and a haircut, if desired.
This year, the program served nearly 3,500 students within the region. In Patrick County alone, 300 students were served. The event is free to each family, but it costs about $20 per child, according to organizers.
“It is an honor to partner together with various churches, businesses and organizations to bless the students of Patrick County. Over 120 volunteers and at least six churches came together as one,” said Pastor Johnny Brown, of Mercy Church.
Next year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 3. To receive supplies at next year’s event, registration is required during the two registration dates during the summer.
The summer registration dates will be released next spring.
“We look forward to watching this event grow as more volunteers, churches, and organizations partner together to meet a need in our community,” said Brown. “I would like to personally thank The Rotary Club of Stuart, B&K Improvements, High Point Baptist Church, Handy Rentals, Faith, Hope, Love Church, MHW Presbyterian Church, Capewell Aerial Systems, and all the individual sponsors who donated to make the Back2School event happen in Patrick County.”
