John Britt, a potter from Penland, N.C., and author of two books on glazes will be at Surry Community College on February 24 and 25, to conduct a workshop. The event is sponsored by the Cultural Diversity Committee and is free and open to the public.
The focus of the workshop will be on glazes—content, effects, and application. Glazes are the glass-like coating on the surface of ceramic art.
The Wednesday workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. The artist will give a slide presentation about his pottery from 4 to 5 p.m. On Thursday, the workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. If time allows, Britt will also demonstrate his throwing techniques.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide regional potters an opportunity to engage with one of most knowledgeable potters in the country concerning glazes. The audience is welcome to ask questions about problems they have with certain glazes. They will also learn about various effects artists can get from glazes.
