Several local volunteer fire departments, along with personnel from the Va. Dept. of Forestry and Patrick County Emergency Management, battled a brush fire Monday on Heidelbach School Road. The Smith River Volunteer Rescue Squad also responded. A state law in effect through April 30 prohibits burning before 4 p.m., or within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable material. Violators may be charged by the state Department of Forestry, and are liable for associated fines and court costs, as well as suppression costs when state personnel and equipment are used. Volunteer fire departments do not bill for providing service. (Photo contributed by Patrick County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Allen.)
