Patrick County High School senior Lexy Carico has signed her National Letter of Intent to Radford University.
Carico is one of Patrick County’s standout athletes. She placed first in 2017 at states in the discus for outdoor track and was named Female Athlete of the Year for the Martinsville Bulletin. She also holds the discus record at PCHS with 134’4”, but looks to break this herself in the upcoming season.
For indoor track she currently holds the indoor shot put record with a throw of 35’6.5”. She finished seventh in state this past season and was MVP the past two indoor seasons. She was also named 2018 First Team All-Region.
Carico will major in pre-medicine (biology) and plans to become an obstetrician/gynecologist. She chose Radford University for many different reason with two main ones being the location (close to home) and the coach at RU.
“Coach Chumbley is the main reason I chose RU. I knew from the moment I met Chumbley when he came to my house for a home visit that he was gonna get me places and get me to be the athlete I know I can be,” said Carico of her new coach.
She is thankful for everyone who has helped her in her career. “I wouldn’t be the athlete or person I am today without track. Coach Nelson McConnell has helped me a lot this year. RJ Scott has been with me since the beginning too. The Slaydons and Winfred Hill have been the absolute best coaches I could ever have.”
Carico added, “They have become more like my family than just coaches, especially Winfred. He is my best friend through everything and my role model. He is like another parent to me and I couldn’t have done any of this without him. He has always been my rock.”
