The Patrick County High School boys’ soccer team traveled to Tunstall last Tuesday. “We played a really good first half,” said Coach Oscar Tejeda, “we dominated the field and time in possession. “The second half was different from the first,” he said. “The Trojans took advantage of our missed opportunities, and we paid it for it big time, losing 5-2. The Cougars need to stay disciplined all 80 minutes of a game and not lose focus,” Tejeda said.
The Cougars hosted last Wednesday night and came out with a huge win for the program and a great way to close out the season on senior night. The final score was 4-3 for the Cougars.
“Not only did we beat Martinsville this year away, we swept them for the first time in school history,” Tejeda said.
The game was very physical with multiple players getting yellow carded and one ejected along with a coach.
“Our Cougars were able to stay disciplined and not retaliate,” Tejeda said.
With a score at 4-2 with about ten minutes to go, the official awarded Martinsville a penalty kick which made it to the back of the net, bringing the Bulldogs within one.
“We were able to hold on to the lead until the end,” Tejeda said.
“We have finished the regular season with a record 3-12-1. This is not the season we had hoped for, but as a coach, I have seen these boys improve and face some of their toughest challenges,” Tejeda said. “Not only did we grow up as a team, we became a stronger family. We will be losing two players at the end of the season, Jesus Olivares and Tom Neureuther, ‘The German.’ We will be a solid team next year and hope to change things around,” he added.
“However, our season is not done just yet. We will play at Cave Springs this Monday for the first round of the conference tournament,” Tejeda said.
