The Patrick County High School Cougar varsity wrestling team traveled to George Washington High School last Wednesday and wrestled in a tri-match against GW and Dan River.
The Cougars started the night off with a tight 37-29 victory over Dan River, followed by a convincing 52-24 win over GW.
“In the first match of the night, we came out a little flat and actually lost a couple matches we probably should have won,” Coach David Morrison said. “You can’t take anything away from Dan River, though; they are very well coached and have some kids who are tough as nails,” Morrison said.
“Coming into the match, we knew it was going to be close, but we thought we matched up with them pretty well. Overall, we didn’t wrestle poorly, but we certainly did not wrestle up to our potential or even our own expectations for that matter,” Morrison said.
“We showed a great deal more resolve and determination in the second match of the night, and the score showed it,” he said. “There were some points that our guys had an opportunity to fold, but they stayed tough and were able to grind out some pretty impressive wins just because we were able to fight every position and stayed tough,” Morrison said.
Colt Martin (138 lbs.) led Cougar wrestlers with two wins Wednesday night, beating Dan River 10-4 and GW 16-8. Tyler Stanley had one pin and one forfeit. Jeremiah Anderson was 2-0 with an 11-1 win at 160 lbs. against Dan River and a pin at 152 lbs. against GW. Shemar Hill won two matches with forfeits, as did James Lane at 220 lbs.
Jacob McNulty picked up a forfeit at 170 lbs. against Dan River. Brian Lange pinned his GW wrestler at 113 lbs. Alfredo Gutierrez also pinned his GW opponent at 126 lbs. Jeremy Gunter scored a pin in 2:47 for a win over GW in the 132-lb. weight class. Hunter Kenyon scored a 55-second pin against his GW opponent at 182 lbs.
The Cougars will travel to Dan River Wednesday (tonight) for a quad meet with Dan River, Chatham, and Hargrave.
