The Patrick County High School indoor track team kicked off its season in Winston-Salem, N.C., last week at the Mighty Explorers Invitational.
“We were very pleased with how our athletes competed in our season opener,” said Coach Danel Slaydon. “Our cross country athletes made a great transition to the shorter distances, and our newcomers had solid performances.”
The girls’ 4×800 relay team (Montana Moorefield, Arielle Taylor, Armonte Carter and Savannah Moorefield) came away with a thrilling win to start off the meet. The boys’ 4×800 team (Gonzalo Vargas, Burke Gonzalez, Juan Cisneros and Zach Montgomery) followed that up with a third place finish.
Lexy Carico made her indoor track debut by setting a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 28’9”.
The boys’ 4x200m team (Gonzalo, Burke, Juan and Zach) and the girls’ 4×200 team (Armonte, Macie Rogers, Montana and Savannah) each set new school records of 1:43 and 1:58, respectively.
Macie Rogers ran strong to win the 1,000m race, while Juan Cisneros out-leaned his competitor at the line to win the same event.
